Rockingham, North Carolina

Rockingham, NCWhen you think of Rockingham, the first thing to come to mind might be the famous Rockingham Speedway, but there is much more to the town than the roar of engines as the cars race to the finish.

Richmond County was formed by North Carolina's General Assembly in October 1779 but town of Rockingham, the county seat, came into being about five years earlier. Named for the Marquis of Rockingham, Charles Watson Wentonworth, the town took education seriously, even during the Revolutionary War, when Richmond Academy was founded. One hundred years later, Wake Forest University was founded.

"Racing fans will not be disappointed because there is nearly always a race or other event scheduled at the Rockingham Speedway and the Rockingham Dragway."

Today Rockingham continues to be a prosperous and vibrant community. With more than 40 industries, including companies such as Burlington and Perdue, its economic basis is sound. The textile industry, which dates back to the 1800s, continues to be a major force in Richmond County.

In addition to industry, agriculture plays an important part in the town's economic structure. Bringing in $47 million annually, the area produces tobacco, fruits, vegetables, corn, soybeans and cotton as well livestock and poultry.

There is much to do in the Rockingham area including the Sandhills Wildlife Game Management, which manages 60,000 acres of prime hunting grounds. The Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge offers a variety of programs for nature lovers. The thousands of acres support an amazing number of wildlife habitats for more than 180 species of birds, 28 mammals, 20 types of fish and 49 species of amphibian and reptilian creatures. Those preferring a more refined outdoor activity will find it at the Richmond Pines Country Club, which has been called "one of the best small courses" in the country.

Cultural activities are also available, including the Richmond Community Theatre, the Rankin Museum of Cultural Heritage and the National Railroad Museum and Hall of Fame.
