Greenville, North Carolina
Originally founded in 1771 as an agricultural community, Greenville now serves as a center for education, international industry, medicine and culture on North Carolina’s crystal coast. Greenville is widely known for its Uptown entertainment, and the city itself serves as a regional entertainment hub for all of eastern North Carolina.
The city boasts a vast array of restaurants catering to all tastes from down-home favorites to gourmet specialties. Several local restaurants have actually been recognized nationally for everything from their wine selection to their excellent barbeque.
East Carolina University, North Carolina’s third largest state-supported college makes its home in Greenville. The East Carolina University Pirates attract avid fans, making athletics a predominate part of the Greenville area. The University provides residents endless entertainment through numerous athletic events, plays, concerts, theatrical and dance productions, travel films and lectures. However, culture permeates the area off campus as well.
Antique stores are scattered throughout the county and offer fabulous finds. Greenville is also home to numerous art galleries that feature major art collections and work of local and regional artists. The Greenville Museum of Art offers tours, rotating exhibits and even art classes. More than 12,000 people visit the museum every year.
Despite its metropolitan status, Greenville maintains a hometown feel that is popular with young families and retirees alike. The strong workforce, along with its healthy environment, attracts many newcomers, and Greenville continues to grow at a fast pace.
The Brody School of Medicine at ECU and the Pitt County Memorial Hospital offer world-class medical care to patients from a seven-county area. The comfortable climate and clean air serves Greenville well and earns it the number ten spot on Kiplinger’s “Healthy Cities” list.
The city is also included on Money Magazine’s list of the “Best Places to Live in America,” and the residents of the town are proud to say that is true. Greenville is known as a great place to live, to work, to raise a family, to play and especially to retire.
